“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" This famous Berlin Wall Speech was delivered by President Ronald Reagan in West Berlin on June 12, 1987.
I was 12 years old at that time, living on the other side of “the wall,” along with the rest of the countries considered to be the “Communist Party Block.” Although we would only get limited news media, that was fully censored, the sentence “Tear down the wall” made its way through into our hearts. The truth cracked the walls of dictatorship and suppression, and this new, unknown hope to us, began to light the way. Two years later, the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989 and shortly after my home country, Bulgaria became free from the communist dictatorship.
